I’ll never get my voice back. Minos swam through the lake with nowhere to go. He wished he had somewhere to be, but being banned, all he could do was linger.

He’d lost his purpose — working for the king — and his voice. Why? Because he’d trusted the wrong mer. Sure, he’d been partially to blame. He’d pursued Rian, the prince of the mers, a bit too heavily. In his defense, he’d thought Rian loved him.

He’d been so wrong.

He continued to swim and cursed the king’s decision to punish him. He didn’t deserve to be without a voice. No one could understand him, and he’d failed at expressing himself. His magic remained, but faded the longer he was punished. Where was this perfect being to complete him and fix the problem?

That being probably didn’t exist.

He couldn’t shake his anger. All he’d wanted was to be loved. He’d truly thought he had a connection with Rian, and that they could’ve even been partners.

Except he knew the truth. He and Rian would never be together. They weren’t couple material.

Fuck. He wished he had his voice back. His anger wasn’t going anywhere, but time made him realize he needed to apologize and be honest with not only Rian, but himself. He’d been terrible to Rian, and the guilt ate at him.

Minos surfaced. One thing he loved was the way the moon shimmered on the waves on the lake at night. The water was never calm, but the ripples reminded him of magic. Like the magic surrounded him. The glittery effect never lasted long, but was still dazzling.

He shook his hair out and surveyed the landscape. At night, the water and sky seemed to blend into endlessness.

The moonlight sparkled on the waves. He trailed his fingers through the dark water. The ripples mesmerized him. A sound filtered to him, and he tipped his head. The sound reminded him of a whistle or horn. A boat?

He glanced over his shoulder and spotted a vessel. He’d seen plenty of boats, and this one didn’t seem overly exciting. It was a bigger watercraft and had people lounging in the moonlight on the deck. They were partying and singing or playing music. One man appeared to have a drink in his hand.

Minos stayed out of sight from the boat and watched the humans. Two men stood at the railing. A woman reclined in a chair, and another one stepped out onto the deck. A third man held a big glass.

Minos hated playing the voyeur, but he couldn’t look away. He wanted a group of friends and a place to belong. Those people seemed carefree and happy.

Maybe he could approach them. One of these people could be his destiny. Was he supposed to talk to the humans? He wasn’t sure how without his voice, but he’d been wrong about the magic before.

He listened closer, but didn’t hear the music. His destiny would come with the specific song of his mate. If anyone in the boat could belong to him, then he would hear the unique tune.

Nothing.

The voices filtered to him again, though, and he honed in on the conversation.

“John wants to tell us something,” one of the women said. She flipped her blonde hair over her shoulder. “He says it’s important.”

“Nothing with John is important.” The dark-haired man swatted at one of the women. “He’d have to speak up first, and he’s so shy.”

“And too dramatic.” The blond man laughed. “He can’t say anything too exciting.”

“Now, it might be important,” the other girl said. “My brother wanted that promotion at work. He’s good at his job and would be a great building manager. He’s been shift manager for a long time and proving himself.”

Minos dipped under the water to breathe. He had no idea what a building manager might be and wondered what it looked like. Did that mean the man was in charge of the boxes the humans lived in? Worked in? He surfaced and listened to the humans talk.

“Well, whatever it is, he can get his ass out here any time now,” one of the guys said.

Minos couldn’t follow the conversation, but he enjoyed listening. The humans were so angry and pushy.

A fourth man ventured out to the deck. The other humans were dressed for night swimming and lounging on the boat, but this guy seemed out of place. He wore glasses and kept his inky black hair cut short. Instead of being dressed like the other men in shorts, he wore a button-down shirt and slacks.

Minos stared at him. He liked the way this man looked. He longed to touch him. A faint tune played in his ears. Was it music from the radio? He wasn’t sure.

Werewolves, romance and adventure

Seducing Destiny: Jack, the alpha of the North Rockies pack, knows Destiny needs some time to come to grips with her werewolf heritage before he springs the whole mated for life thing on her, but when a band of rogue werewolves move into the area, Jack can’t afford to have his attention divided. It’s time to convince Destiny she belongs in his pack — and in his bed.

Dark Kisses: Kidnapped and dumped in unfamiliar territory, Katie has no idea where she is or why the geriatric old fool chose the Northern Rockies Pack territory to dump her, bound hand and foot. The fact that she’s just come into heat doesn’t help matters either. When Jeff finds her, his mere presence sends flames of liquid lust sizzling through her veins. Can she resist the dark wolf, or will she succumb to his wildly sexy dark kisses?

EXCERPT:

“Destiny stared in dismay at the box in the middle of her kitchen table. Her stomach lurched, a ball of anxiety settling in the very middle of it. Small by most standards, gold gilt covered the entire box, giving it an exotic look. An artfully tied crimson bow surrounded by curls of white lace sat cheerfully atop it, adding to the air of decadent luxury.

She knew who’d put it there, and she knew why. Jack. The Alpha of the Northern Rockies werewolf pack. The man who made her knees feel weak whenever she glimpsed him walking down the main street, or lounging at a local coffee shop. The man who’d make it plain that he intended to be her mate.

The absolute last man on the face of the planet that she intended to get serious about.

She had a boyfriend, one carefully picked with the future in mind. A trial attorney she’d met when she attended a convention in Calgary, Quentin Karnes had everything she wanted in a mate. On the fast track to a partnership in his prestigious law firm, he was cultured, rich, and moved in the highest social circles. Their children would grow up attending private schools, vacationing at the most prestigious resorts, dressing in the latest fashions. They’d want for nothing.

She’d worked hard to carve out a niche for herself in Riverton. Her accounting office catered to farmers and small businessmen, and she’d slowly managed to gain a reputation of being the person you wanted on your side when the government called to audit your tax returns.

She steeled herself and reached for the box. It wasn’t much bigger than a deck of cards, and she held it in her hand, somehow hoping that wishing would make it go away. When she’d moved here two years ago, she’d made it clear to Jack and every other member of the pack that she didn’t intend to join their little social group. She preferred to run alone. She hadn’t grown up in a pack, and if she could, she’d ignore her inner wolf entirely. So what if the sight of a full moon awakened an overpowering urge for a steak with the blood oozing out the sides? A girl needed to curb her baser instincts and make plans for the future.

No point in putting this off. Her sensitive nose could smell Jack all over the damn thing. She caught the trailing lace between a thumb and forefinger and gently undid the bow, dropping the cheerful piece of ribbon on the table. Taking a deep breath, she plucked the lid off.

Her breath caught in her throat. An exquisitely detailed chocolate wolf nestled in a cushion of crushed white velvet. Every detail from the tip of its muzzle to the dominant curve of its tail was perfect. Jack had reproduced himself exactly. She knew if she turned the little wolf over, she’d find a jagged scar running along its left flank.

“I suppose I could always bite your head off.” Destiny felt a wry smile tug the sides of her mouth. Although she didn’t like the idea, being the Alpha meant Jack had complete authority over all the werewolves in the Northern Rockies. Even those that didn’t want to accept him. The fact he’d chosen not to force her to take him for her mate didn’t mean he’d agreed to let her leave the pack. He’d said he’d give her some time to settle in. She’d hoped he’d forgotten about her and settled down with some other female. One who liked her inner beast.

She sighed and looked at the dark chocolate confection. The full moon was less than a week away. She’d been ignoring her darker side for a long time now, and she knew she wouldn’t be able to avoid going into heat this month. What were the chances Jack’s timing was coincidental?

She jumped, startled by the sound of a loud knock on her front door. Quentin must have gotten out of court early. She hadn’t expected him to show up for at least another four hours. She quickly put the lid back on the box. Sweeping the ribbon up off the table, she stuffed the box and ribbon into a drawer and slammed it shut.

“Come on in, the door’s open.” She hoped Quentin couldn’t hear the guilt in her voice. Not that she had anything to feel guilty about. Damn Jack and his fancy little chocolate creatures! She smoothed her hands down her skirt and tried to look calm.

“I know, I was just being polite.” Jack strode into the room, a crooked smile on his rugged face. “You’re not usually this happy to see me.”

Destiny’s heart did a little flip-flop. Taller than her five-foot eleven, Jack’s dark hair was tied at the nape of his neck with a strip of leather, and his sapphire blue eyes sparkled with mischief. Thickly roped muscles stretched the tight shirt and rippled with every step he took. He looked every bit as yummy as the chocolate creations he sold in his trendy boutique.

“I thought you were my boyfriend.” She looked pointedly behind him as if she expected Quentin to materialize any second. “I’m expecting him to drop in after court today.”

Jack ignored her reference to Quentin and gave her a toothy grin. “I intend to be a lot more than a friend, and it’s been a long time since anyone referred to me as a boy.” He advanced, his eyes sparkling. “Glad to hear you finally think of me that way, though, because unless my nose is deceiving me, you’re going to be begging for my attention shortly.”

Destiny felt a surge of color flood her cheeks and she turned away so he couldn’t see her face. It mortified her to know he could smell her eagerness. “You wish.” Now that was lame!

He took her by the shoulders and turned her around to face him, his touch surprisingly gentle for such a large man. “No, I know. The full moon is on Saturday. You haven’t slept with that wimpy boyfriend of yours, and you’re not going to if you want him to live to see Monday. A human male can’t begin to satisfy your needs. I wouldn’t have to lift a paw; you’d tear him apart yourself. Your frustration level is about to escalate to hellish proportions.” A devilishly wicked smile curved the corner of his mouth. “Fortunately, I can help you deal with that.”

Stephen Skollsgaard is worn down from the duties of Pack Alpha. Now, the Huntress demands he hunt magical prey in a ceremonial hunt — one more burden for an overwhelmed Alpha. And worse, she sends an arrogant, narcissistic dragon to accompany him.

The Dragon Zhang doesn’t care much for things outside the Celestial Realm-but one good look at the sexy Pack Alpha Stephen and he’s willing to spend a little time in the real world. Plus, that Alpha looks like he needs a bit of taming, which Zhang is always eager to do.

It’s time for Stephen to prove his worth and hunt his prey, but will he find he’s the prey of the dragon, instead?

“If you like your romantic heroes to be combative, yet passionate, if you enjoy imaginative stories of the fantastical kind, and if you’re looking for an entertaining “battle of the wills’” with an ending that is as passionate as it is happy, then you will probably like this short novella.”  Serena Yates, Rainbow Book Reviews

Throwback Thursday! Christmas is coming and so are the Tinsel Wars…

1A little early, I know, but it’s kind of dull and grey and COLD up here in my world. Nothing like a little magic and the promise of a shiny holiday to cheer me up! I’ve written a lot of Christmas stories over the years, and this is one of my favorites.

Happy Reading!

Anne Kane

Blurb:

“Seriously?” Misty stared at the brightly colored ornaments dripping from every branch of the giant Christmas tree in the ballroom. Braedon stood to one side, admiring his handiwork. “Don’t you think you’re overdoing it a bit?”

Braedon gave a negative shake of his head, the corner of his mouth lifting in a satisfied smile. “Not at all. The Reindeer Games are all about Christmas, and Christmas isn’t about holding back. It’s about magic and brilliantly shiny decorations and getting your heart’s desire.”

Was she imagining that simmering spark in the depths of his eyes? It had been over two years since the infamous Tinsel Wars had ended their ill-advised affair and sent them fleeing to opposite ends of the North Pole.

Santa wasn’t big on dissention in the ranks.

A gorgeous hunk of Elf like Braedon must have had dozens of brainless little Elf twits throwing themselves at him every day. Once he got over the shock of her deliberately ruining their relationship, he probably hadn’t given her another thought. She shouldn’t have overreacted earlier.

So Braedon was here at the Reindeer Games. Big deal. It had been two years. He’d probably settled down with a nice Elf and maybe even had a few little ones by now. Only, she couldn’t bring herself to ask him because she couldn’t imagine how she’d react if he confirmed it.

“That’s true, but it doesn’t mean you need to get tacky. Here.” She pretended she didn’t see his brows rise toward the ceiling as she stepped up to the tree and began to systematically strip two-thirds of the decorations from the branches. “Less is sometimes more.” She paused a moment, tilting her head to study the denuded fir, then quickly rearranged a series of shiny red bells to fill in some of the now glaring bare spots.

Ever since he’d arrived at the Reindeer Farms, Braedon had been acting like there was nothing wrong between them. After the tinsel fiasco at Christmas Central, she’d expected him to be mad, or upset or something. Anything. Their budding relationship aside, she’d damned near derailed his career prospects. He had to know she’d done it deliberately. This calm facade of his was driving her insane!

She imagined she could feel his gaze boring a hole in her back. She really needed to work on her overactive imagination. It was just possible that she’d meant that little to him.

Taking a deep breath she silently recited her new mantra. I am me, not a reflection of my family.

Okay, that wasn’t helping. Maybe she just needed a drink. Or two. Or a case of one hundred proof mistletoe juice. Unfortunately, that would have to wait until after they finished decorating the tree for tomorrow night’s opening ball of the Reindeer Games.

“You do know I have a degree in artistic tree arrangements, right?” Braedon carefully replaced each of the removed ornaments back on the tree, a hint of laughter in his voice.

Laughter? Seriously?

“Really? I hadn’t heard. You think you’d be better at it, then.” Misty stepped to the far side of the tree and began to remove items again. She hated how catty she sounded, but his attitude was starting to piss her off.

“Can’t see how. Did I mention that I won the Decorator’s Choice award last year for my work on the sixty-foot tree outside the Christmas Central depot?” Stepping to her side, Braedon carefully took her hand in his, stopping her from reaching for any more of the unfortunate decorations.

Up close, the tangy smell of his cologne sent the blood racing through her veins. Damn. She’d thought she could handle a few days in his presence, but now she wasn’t so sure.

PG-13 EXCERPT:

“Sure you don’t mind my taking off like this?” Mindy asked while putting her second earring in and standing in the cabin’s back doorway.

“Not at all.” Kayla stretched her legs out toward the fire she’d made in the fire pit on their back patio, a box of graham crackers, chocolate bars, and a bag of marshmallows on the table beside her. “I’m going to make myself sick on s’mores and beer, maybe text Detective Ford a few times to see if he’ll bite at an offer for phone sex, then I’ll pass out.”

Mindy giggled—more from nervousness than Kayla’s plans. “Good luck with the phone sex.”

“Thanks.” Kayla puffed a breath between her lips. “God knows, I’m going to need it.”

Fluttering her fingers, Mindy made for the front of their cabin, grabbing a sweater and her purse on the way.

She’d agreed to meet Gage at his car at five, and while she felt bad skipping out on Kayla, her friend honestly didn’t seem to mind. An only child, Kayla claimed she enjoyed quiet “me” time and had often taken off for her daddy’s house when Mindy and Meg had smothered her in their apartment.

“Bring me back some Sour Patch Kids!” Kayla’s holler carried in the clear mountain air.

“You got it!” Mindy yelled back with a laugh, picking her way through the trees between the two cabins’ driveways.

Gage waited for her beside his truck, jeans fitting his thighs and bulge the way a man’s jeans ought to fit, black t-shirt hugging every swell and dip of his upper body. He didn’t move while she approached, but his gaze slid down over her and back up in the lingering way that flushed Mindy through with heat.

Strappy sandals and a short, pale-green sundress were the best she could come up with. Not having expected to find someone to hook up with while at the secluded Sandy Ridge cabin, she’d packed mostly for comfort.

“Damn, woman,” Gage said as she drew closer.

“You like?” she asked, twirling around for him.

He shook his head, but his smirk and dimple told her the truth of his thoughts. “Get in the car before I decide to say to hell with dinner and drag you inside the cabin.”

Mindy’s breath caught. “I’m game for that…”

Gage pulled open the passenger door and motioned her forward. “In.”

EXCERPT: (R)

I knelt in the middle of the dungeon-like room as I’d seen on the countless BDSM websites I’d been studying the past month, exactly like they’d shown us new subs at the introduction class the evening before. Butt naked, dick already at half-mast because I finally had the chance to explore the darkness inside of me that had killed my ten-year marriage.

As CEO of a prominent software company, I took pride in my self-control and stoic nature. Being a bastard had gotten me up the rung to where I sat comfortably behind a glass desk with windows overlooking Baltimore’s skyline. It had also earned me a nasty divorce a year earlier when my ex-wife took over half of what we owned, leaving me with a broken heart and near-empty bank accounts. At least a constant work load since then had gotten me closer to where I’d been before she’d attempted to wipe me out.

I studied my hands resting on my bare thighs. Springy hair tickled my palms. While the hair on my body remained a dark blond, the previous two years of hell had shot gray through the thick strands on my head and the scruff I couldn’t keep from lining my jaw.

Forty-three and already fucking gray. Wouldn’t help my chance at dating — if I ever got the balls to put myself out there again. I’d been celibate for over a year. Dead inside, unable to give two shits about anything but work, unable to get it up, too. I also didn’t have the energy to get involved, let alone think of dating.

Familiar exhaustion tugged on my eyelids, and I let them close while waiting for the Domme the club’s owner had booked me with for the night — Mistress Jaycie. A woman I’d never met, a woman I was going to let control me in whatever way she wanted.

Time to give over. Time to explore my lust for pain and hopefully float into that mysterious subspace I’d been reading about.

My dick twitched at the thought of pure, empty-headed euphoria.

Would the Domme I’d been paired with have a heavy hand? Would she be beautiful? Did I even care? I just wanted — craved — submission, the type that would erase the shit in my mind for a while and maybe get my rocks off.

My ex had been vanilla, same as I’d always been, and when I got the urge to introduce something new in the bedroom, she’d looked at me with disgust. Hell, I’d only suggested handcuffs and ropes, hoping she’d agree so we could eventually move on to what I really wanted.

No such fucking luck.

I breathed deep and exhaled my thoughts along with the lungful of used-up air. The silence coating the dim, private scening room at Monique’s club in downtown Baltimore soothed me. Even if it turned out the BDSM lifestyle wasn’t for me, I’d at least have gotten to experience a semi-hard dick again.

A click sounded as the door opened, and I kept my head and gaze lowered as I’d been instructed in the class. Awareness crept over my skin like an electrical charge as heels clicked on hardwood. My heartbeat accelerated. The subtle scent of oranges hit my nose as black leather stiletto boots came into my line of sight.

Hot as fuck. I bit back my groan as my cock thickened. I swallowed against sudden nervousness, something I hadn’t experienced since my teenage years.

“Hmm…” she murmured. The boots rounded to my left, disappearing in my periphery. “On your feet, slave.” Her low, husky voice prickled my skin, bringing my dick to full attention.

I rose with as much grace as I could, hands at my sides, erection sticking up close to my navel.

A soft inhale tickled my ears as I straightened completely.

I knew what she saw — what she probably didn’t expect for a man teetering on the brink of the downslope from his prime. Daily yoga, running, and weight training kept my body looking the same as it had at twenty-five.

Something tailed down my backbone and across the top of my ass cheeks, lacking the warmth of skin. Crop? Cane? The urge to know made me want to shift my stance, but I held still.

She rounded to the right and stopped in front of me.

From my height, most of her body came into view even though I kept my head lowered. The black leather of her boots hugged defined calves, stopping just above her knees. A good twelve inches of smooth, pale skin gave way to a tight leather skirt — also black — over flared hips, ending at her tiny waist. She held a crop in her right hand.

My dick actually jumped, bumping my abs.

I glanced up through my lashes, filling my eyes with the corset-cinched tits threatening to spill over the top. The milky-white globes set my mouth to watering.

“You will call me Mistress.”
