More dragonblood than human, Primrose Cadet yearns to find her fated mates and ease the loneliness of her secluded life. But with her beta behind psychiatric bars and the other denying his beastly nature—and hers—she’ll have to fight for them, even if it means exposing her heritage.

A manipulative voice in his head promising he can fly landed Jaxon Denham in the psych ward. Eighteen and legally allowed to finally leave his parent’s enforced prison, he searches out the golden goddess of his dreams, the one the voice within claims will give them the release they crave.

Doctor Patrick Macaire fought his inner darkness for thirty-four years, living a life of self-control and discipline to prove his sanity. When a barely legal boy and seductive siren threaten the foundation of his calm existence, he’s driven to battle the voice inside and remain untouched.

But fate is clever, and Patrick’s relentless mates won’t allow him peace, catching him up in unhuman-like passion that threatens his self-identity. Will he accept he’s an alpha dragonblood born to dominate his mates, or will his human side keep the three from fulfilling their destiny?

EXCERPT:

The second night I’d stood cloaked outside Lockwood’s eastern wing, the need to be impulsive, something I’d never dealt with before, fought my better judgment. Regardless of my beta’s mental state, I had wanted to sneak into his room and allow him to have his way with me, claim me like my inner dragon longed for.
Luckily, my ancestors had kept informative records in the cavern’s library of my sheltered upbringing, so I understood all the possible sexual positions—and means of giving pain for pleasure—as most alpha blood born were known for. Unfortunately, I had no personal knowledge of such things, and my dragon was determined to undermine my will to wait for his freedom.
My fingers ached from grasping the chain-link fence to keep my human form in place. The energy linking me to the window strengthened and pulled taut as a shadow moved into view. Even with my dragon sight, I couldn’t make out the color of his hair or eyes, but as he turned his head side to side as though seeking out where the energy attaching us came from, I took note of a strong nose and full lips, a square jaw I wanted to lick and nip with my teeth as he thrust into me.
Arousal, hot and wet, rose between my thighs, same as the previous night, and I bit my lips, my dragon’s needy growl rumbling in my chest as my beta locked his gaze on where I stood, cloaked by a dragonblood gift and darkness.
Want.
My human form wanted, too, and I swallowed as my dragon attempted to take over in a burst of golden light I quickly squashed. “Soon,” I promised with a whisper.
Through the tall, barred windows, I realized my beta’s hand moved over his body, the heat in the energy linking us rising. Did he touch himself? He propped his forehead on the window, shoulder hunched as though in pain, and again, I fought the need to shift, tear through the fence and walls to free my beta mate.
His form stiffened, and head tipped back, and the most luscious race of tingles swept through me, settling in my core.
Need.
Lower lip between my teeth, I released one hand from its hold and slid my fingertips down over the front of my leggings where I throbbed. I gasped as the feather touch grazed the hardened nub at the top of my slit, and I rubbed back up over it, my hips bucking on their own as though he thrust into me, burying against my womb.
Heat exploded like a blinding light through the energy between us, capturing my human form and my inner dragon in a euphoric race to the stars. I cried out, unable to keep my lips sealed as wave after wave rippled through my body, pulsing my pussy where his hard length ought to be.
I gasped for breath, my stare on the window as he slowly moved away from sight seconds later. Wetness coated my leggings, the sweet scent of my cum rising to fill my nose.
Please.
My dragon whimpered with the need for more, for our beta’s physical touch, but I tore myself away from the fence and focused on the motel’s room where I would plan my silent, cloaked assault on the mental hospital where one of my mates remained locked inside.
I would free him come morning—or die trying to.

Meet Cynthia Sax and her stable of Sexy Cyborgs!

choosingchuckles_ebookx2_500x750Why I Don’t Plan To Ever Stop Writing Cyborg Romance by Cynthia Sax

I was a cyborg romance reader long before I was a cyborg romance writer. Series like Laurann Dohner’s Cyborg Seduction and Eve Langlais’ Cyborgs: More than Machines got me hooked. I continue to read awesome cyborgs series like Anne Kane’s Terra Five and Naomi Lucas’ Cyborg Shifters.

I also write cyborg romance. I’ve written 15 cyborg romances, plan to write dozens, perhaps hundreds more…depending on how long I live. (grins) I don’t foresee a time I will ever not write cyborg romance.

Why?

Well, first, let’s talk about what a cyborg is. According to Wikipedia ( https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cyborg ), a cyborg is “a being with both organic and biomechatronic body parts.” He is part man, part machine. Many of our wounded warriors are technically cyborgs.

(As an aside, I once told a wounded warrior that I wrote about cyborgs, about military men who were part machine as he was. That blew his mind. He couldn’t believe that women would read, would fantasize about men like him, men with robotic legs and other parts. It totally changed his view of himself.)

How much man and how much machine a cyborg is can vary. My cyborgs are about half and half. Some writers’ cyborgs are more machine. Some writers’ cyborgs are more man.

The machine component can be fairly standard (My cyborgs do vary with their different models. They have evolved over the years.) but the human part guarantees that every cyborg hero or heroine is unique. No two humans are alike. No two cyborgs are alike (unless they are clones but even then they might vary).

That means every cyborg romance is different also. Yes, there are often themes we can expect. Usually there’s that delicious conflict between man and machine, emotion and logic that I love. Will the cyborg set aside logic and love, making decisions based on an emotion that often doesn’t adhere to rational thinking? Because every cyborg is unique, they will deal with that conflict in different ways.

The uniqueness of these characters ensures I am unlikely to ever grow restless writing OR reading cyborg romance. There are SO many stories I want to write and read. I can’t wait to enjoy them!

What do you love about reading or writing cyborg romance?

Choosing Chuckles

A Cynical Cyborg Meets A Bad, Bad Female.

Chuckles hates all humans. In the past, humans betrayed him. That treachery caused permanent damage to his muscular form, resulting in a lifespan of pain.

Bettina, aka Bait, works with a team of females, snaring sexual predators in space, seizing their ships and transporting them to primitive planets. As soon as she speaks with Chuckles, she knows he’s not like the others. He has honor, is a being worthy of respect, of caring.

But she can’t let him go. She has to trap him. His dominance thrills her. His deep voice evokes desires she’d never experienced in the past. She’ll risk it all, breaking every rule for one wild encounter with the male she calls Sir.

Druids, Adveture, Time Travel and more!

The Soul of Time: In the Land of Ice and Darkness, time-traveller Ashley faces The Thief of Souls (The Time For Alexander Series Book 6) by [Macaire, Jennifer]The Soul of Time

In the Land of Ice and Darkness, time-traveller Ashley faces the terrible Thief of Souls

(The Time For Alexander Series Book 6)

Ashley and Alexander come face to face with Volterix, the terrifying Thief of Souls – a druid with powers to stop time and change the future of the world.

Ashley and Alexander must travel to the far north in order to stop the Volterix from irrevocably changing time. With Alexander’s soul, and Paul as his puppet, the druid hopes he can stop the Roman legions from conquering Europe and thus save the druids from extinction. But Ashley knows that will not happen without the mysterious Time-Senders erasing all their lives.

In order to save herself, her children, and the men she loves, she has to somehow get Alexander’s soul back and find the druid’s lair.

Excerpt:

If you’ve always lived in the modern world, and never had the chance to take a trip back in time, then you can never imagine how sweet the air was before the invention of fossil fuels. In my daytime, the earth was surrounded in a faint haze of pollution. Here, there was nothing but the faint scent of wood smoke. Otherwise, the air was as clean and pristine as the beginning of the world. The water was clean, the air was clean, the ocean was full of fish, and wild animals still roamed the forests.
As a matter of fact, there was one right in front of me.
Nothing too scary, just a large, grey wolf. He was sitting in a clearing staring at me, and something in his yellow gaze was reassuring. He was not hungry, and his eyes seemed to tell me that he was just curious about the pale, two-legged beast shuffling noisily through the forest. It was his forest. He lived there. We were just passing through, but he had been born beneath the towering pines and would live his whole life there before dying beneath the very same trees. We were his guests for the short time we stayed there.
There was a swift stream nearby, and I washed myself. I was very careful to leave everything just as I’d found it.
The wolf had vanished silently. I suppose he was somewhere close by keeping an eye on us. The thought that maybe it was a druid flickered like a spark through my mind, but three thousand years of civilization put the spark out as if I’d dumped a whole bucket of water on it. Absurd. People don’t change themselves into animals. They simply can’t. It is impossible, going against all the laws of science and nature. Matter doesn’t change into other matter. The wolf was a wolf and that was that.
Of course, I’d come across a monkey claiming to be a druid. He could write in Greek on a wax tablet and pluck silver coins out of purses, but even that could be explained – by thin layers of wax, by patient training. I didn’t for an instant believe the monkey had really once been a man.
Or did I? I sat down at the water’s edge and stared at the flowing stream. Small green leaves floated in eddies. I plucked one and nibbled it. Watercress was one of the edible plants I was capable of recognizing. I sighed for no particular reason and glanced up at the sky, visible through the canopy. Sunlight dappled my face and arms. A trout splashed in the stream, startling me. I wished I knew what was going to happen next. I had the frightening feeling that I was cut off from the world. I hated the way we were being herded along towards an unknown destination. There had to be a way to escape, or at least turn the situation more towards our advantage.
What frightened me the most was that a group of powerful men had stolen Alexander’s soul somehow and had decided to change the future by using Paul to unite the tribes of Gaul. If that happened, the Gauls would defeat the Roman Empire. Progress would be stopped. The druids were leery of writing and still made human sacrifices. If they succeeded in their plans, history, as I knew it, would be erased, along with Alexander, me, and everyone we knew and loved.

Book Review – Angel Betrayed by Cynthia Eden

If you read my blog at all you know I generally don’t do book reviews on my blog, but since I haven’t got anything else to rave about today, I might as well tell you about the book I just finished reading. If you want to know how much I enjoyed it, let me explain that I picked it up on a whim Friday night about 8:30. and I finished it about an hour ago.

Now that might not sound like a fast read, but consider that I had my grandkids for the weekend, and I took them to watch The Crimes of Grindewald  Saturday afternoon. So I didn’t get to read it from cover to cover, which I probably would have if I could have. I was hooked from page one!

This is not a new book, the release date was 2012 so many of you may have already read it. I’ve never been good at reviews because I don’t want to give away too much of the story, but here goes. Seline is a half breed demon, who’s just starting to realize the things she’s been told her whole life may not be entirely true. She’s feisty, and I got to say I love her attitude. She is no wimpy little heroine. She knows what she wants and she intends to get it, even if that sexy Fallen Angel gets in her way.

Did I mention a sexy Fallen Angel? Hot damn! Make that double Hot Damn! Even though he’s a fallen angel, and not a heavenly one, you can’t help but admire him. You can even admire the reason he got kicked out of the heavenly hosts (but I’ll let you read about that for yourself) And you just have to love the way he’s fixated on Seline. It might take him a while to admit it, but he is every bit as hooked on that luscious little demon as I was on this story.

There’s a very complicated plot that keeps you guessing, a couple of Hellhounds that add a bit of local color, some more Others (as in non-human characters) and even a little bit of magic.

I highly recommend this book, and I’m going to hunt down the rest of the series as my own little Christmas present to myself. If I had a review system (did I mention I don’t usually do book reviews?) I’d give this one 5 stars, or maybe 5 eternal flames. Yeah. It was that good!

Disclaimer: The author did not give me a copy of this book or any kind of reward for reviewing it or even suggest I read it. I actually don’t know the author (but she just landed on my favorites list)

It’s listed on Amazon here or you can look it up where ever you get your books.

Haydn laughed and draped his arm around Jackson’s shoulders. “I don’t think your fire companion is going to be too happy when you tell her about the dent you put in her new car!”

Jackson grinned, unrepentant. “Not to worry. I’ll just give her a little of my special brand of loving and she’ll forget to be mad at me.” He pointed to a table at the far side of the packed barroom. “Looks like we’re late. The guys already have a table.”

They shouldered their way through the Friday night crowd at the Pagan’s Corner, jostling good-naturedly with the other residents of Utopia Bay. Shifters, paranormals and humans all came to the local pub to have a good time, and the bouncers made sure racial tensions didn’t get out of hand.

Haydn grabbed a chair and straddled it backward, resting his chin on his crossed arms. “So what’s the plan for the night? It’s been a bitch of a week at work and I’m raring for some action.”

“May I take your orders, sirs?”

Haydn turned at the sound of that soft voice, and stared right into the prettiest pair of brown eyes he’d ever seen. Framed by soft brown skin and close clipped dark curls, those eyes bored a hole right to his heart. Unprecedented need exploded in his gut. His mated friends had always told him it would happen one day when he least expected it. He realized he was looking at his souler.

He let his gaze roam the rest of her ample charms while an appreciative smile crossed his lips. The quip rose to his tongue with the ease of years spent pursuing every female he could find. “Darling, I’d love to have you take my orders.”

She didn’t even blink, just raised one of those perfectly sculpted eyebrows and stared at him. He swore the temperature in the bar dropped ten degrees.

A couple of the guys whistled, and Jackson had the nerve to laugh out loud. “That one’s not going to fall for any of your pat lines, Haydn, so you might as well order a drink. Cassie doesn’t do dragons.”

“A mug of whatever’s on tap.” Haydn kept his eyes lowered, struggling to keep the redness from creeping up his neck. He had a reputation as a player, and it had been a long time since a woman had stonewalled him quite that thoroughly.

“Same for me.” Jackson tossed some money on the table.

Haydn watched her scribble the order down before she turned back to the bar. She held herself straight and proud, her wide hips sashaying beneath a calf-length denim skirt. He felt his cock jerk to attention at the thought of all that soft, warm flesh beneath him. Damn! He turned to Jackson. “What do you mean, she doesn’t do dragons?”

“Hey, don’t shoot the messenger.” Jackson held his hand up in mock fear. “She’s one of the humans that Egan’s group, Bound for Freedom, managed to save. To say she’s terrified of dragons would be putting it mildly. Can’t say I blame her, those rogues are a mean bunch.”

“Damn, that sucks.” Haydn watched her load drinks onto the tray and head back toward their table. “I’ll have to be real gentle with her.”

Jackson stared at him as if he’d just grown a second head. “Are you crazy? That girl is never going to go out with you. What part of ‘terrified of dragons’ did you not get?”

Haydn smiled gently. “She’s my fire companion. Of course she’ll go out with me. She just needs to get used to the idea.”

Across the table, another of his other friends shook his head in sympathy. “You think Cassandra is your fire companion? You’ve got your work cut out for you, man. I’ve heard some of Egan’s stories, and they aren’t pretty. You’ll be lucky if she lets you get within ten feet of her front door.”

Haydn watched the woman’s ample bosoms sway enticingly while she wound her way back to their table. “You said her name is Cassie, Jackson. What else do you know about her?”

Jackson shook his head. “Not much. Her full name is Cassandra, but everyone calls her Cassie. Egan’s group, Bound for Freedom, rescued her and she decided to stay here instead of returning to her home, wherever that was. She got this job right after her rescue, and cleaned out one of the cabins at the edge of town to live in.” He paused, his brow furrowing with concentration. “I don’t think she’s dated anyone since Egan freed her, certainly not a dragon.”

Haydn felt a knot he didn’t even know he had relax in his gut. She didn’t date. That was a good sign. It meant she was waiting for him, whether she knew it or not.

He smiled up at her when she reached their table. “Sorry for my rudeness earlier. You’re just so pretty my brain didn’t kick into gear.” So far so good. She hadn’t dumped the beer over his head yet. “Maybe when you get off shift, we could go grab a bite to eat?”

Out of the corner of his eye, he saw Jackson roll his eyes. He obviously thought Haydn was nuts, but it didn’t matter. All that mattered was his fire companion. She hesitated for a split second, and his heart leapt with hope.

“I don’t think that would be wise, sir.” Her voice had a musical lilt to it that resonated to the very center of his being. Her dark lashes swept down over her eyes, hiding her expression. She set the drinks down and turned to leave. He lifted his hand, intending to stop her, but let it fall.

She had the look of a rabbit just before his dragon snatched it from the ground, and he didn’t want her to think of him as a monster. He’d find another way to approach her.

One Hot Fairy TaleUse the promo code ReadABannedBook on any order at Changeling Press now till the end of October and take 15% off your total — as many books as you can fit in your cart!

FUN FACT:

Okay, this book wasn’t actually banned, but the original cover, after eight long years on the market, was banned by KOBO. The cover artist at Changeling Press (Bryan Keller) had to hand paint that lovely little thong you see on the genie in order to make the cover acceptable. On the original cover Rhiannon was not wearing a thong, but KOBO decided it might offend someone (even though her private parts weren’t actually visible) , hence the thong. She looks so much more respectable in a thong! For a look at the original cover, scroll down to the bottom of the post. 🙂

Blurb:

Rhiannon is sick and tired of her job. She wants out. Literally. For the past six hundred years she’s been the Genie in the Lamp. You know the drill. Some dumb human comes along, rubs the lamp, and presto! Rhiannon has to grant them three wishes. She’s tired of humans, and she’s tired of making their dreams come true. She petitions the head of the Council of the Fae to replace her, and she’s ecstatic when her request is granted.

Of course, there’s one teensie little condition. Isn’t there always?

She has to travel to the far reaches of the fairy realm and convince the tooth fairy to go back to work. It seems she isn’t the only who’s tired of her job. And when she finds the elusive fairy, he’s nothing like what she expected. It’s time to turn the tables on the Council of the Fae

EXCERPT:

“You want me to do what?” Rhiannon stared at the representative from the Genie Council. Dressed in bright silk harem pants and a heavily sequined vest, he’d materialized in her cozy little lamp with no warning at all. Of course, she’d been waiting for an answer to her petition since the last full moon so he wasn’t entirely unexpected.

“We want you to find the tooth fairy and convince him to go back to work.” The genie toyed with the cord that held up his harem pants. “Seems he’s gone AWOL, and the humans are starting to notice. If you can do this small task for us, the Council of the Fae may feel inclined to grant your request.”

Rhiannon let out an exasperated sigh. Small task, my ass. “And how am I supposed to find a fairy? I’m a genie. Fairies live in a whole different realm, one I don’t know my way around.”

The representative shrugged. “You’re the one with a petition in front of the Council. You solve this problem for them, and they’re more likely to look favorably on it.”

Rhiannon bit back a curse. That was tantamount to blackmail. Why hadn’t she seen this coming? Actually, she’d expected them to turn her down outright. The last genie in a bottle had to serve the full one thousand years before she’d been reassigned to live happily ever after with some corporal in the U.S. Army. They must be desperate to find the tooth fairy if they were willing to negotiate with her.

“How long do I have to get him to reconsider? It’s a male, right?”

The genie’s mouth twisted in a wry smile. “Yes, he’s male, and you have one week to find him and talk him into returning to work. We can cover his absence for a week, but after that people are going to start noticing. If you fail to convince him, it’s back in the bottle for you.”

Right. Seven days. Let’s not make this an impossible task or anything. “So how long has he been missing?”

The genie raised his wrist, surveying a gaudy cartoon character watch. “Almost two hours now. Time’s a wasting.” He made shooing movements with his hands. “Go on. Go find him and talk some sense into him.”

“Right.” She could do this. Fairies were slight, kind of airy things right? If he refused to cooperate, she’d just threaten to tickle him until he peed his pants. That should bring him around. “So do you have any hints as to where I might find this tooth fairy guy?”

“If we knew that, we wouldn’t need you! We’d go find him ourselves.” The exasperation in the genie’s voice was gratifying. “I’d suggest you hoof it over to the fairy realm and start looking. It’s a big place. Now if you’ll excuse me, I have a Cinderella Ball to attend tonight and I need to get my tux dry-cleaned.”

“Fine. I’ll get right on this.” She summoned what she hoped was a convincing smile. “I take it you can see yourself out?”

“Of course. I saw myself in.” With a flourish of his hand, the genie disappeared, a lingering cloud of pale green smoke the only thing to mark his passage.

Rhiannon looked around cautiously, making sure he wasn’t hiding on top of one of the bookshelves or in a corner. Council representatives weren’t the most trustworthy characters. She wouldn’t put it past him to make a show of leaving and then hide somewhere to spy on her.

She checked the last bookshelf. Yup, he was gone. Time to get moving. First, she needed to freshen up her makeup, and put on her lucky pair of black patent leather knee-high boots. She’d find the silly tooth fairy and get him back to work. She had to. Another four hundred years in this damn bottle, and she’d be ready to kill every single member of the Council of the Fae.

Throwback Thursday! Love and Wishes #paranormal romance

anne-kane-loveandwishes500x750

Title: Love and Wishes

Genres: Paranormal, Futuristic

Themes: Interracial, Magic and  Mayhem

Author: Anne Kane

http://www.annekane.com

BLURB:

Jenna has a secret — her alien blood makes her completely lose control during sex. It takes a strong man to be able to stand up to her demands, and so far she hasn’t found one strong enough to want to come back for more. On the eve of the biggest Sci-Fi convention in the known universe, she makes a wish. Now it’s up to Doug, the sexy troubleshooter from the Wishes Gone Wrong department of Wishlabz Inc. to make sure it comes out right. Because a wish gone wrong can be a very dangerous thing…

EXCERPT:

“You killed him?” She couldn’t help it. Her voice rose to a high-pitched squeak.

Doug laughed. “Hell no. He’s just out for the next forty-eight hours or so. Little known fact about Tra’toni; they have a very sensitive pressure point at the base of their skulls. Press it hard enough, they drop like a stone and stay there for a long time.”

Relief flooded through her. “So why don’t we stay and clear things up with security?” She looked around as he changed direction, hustling her down a long corridor away from the main conference area. “The exhibits are all the other way. Where are we going?”

Doug draped an arm around her shoulder and pulled her in for a long heated kiss just as a couple of people decked out in futuristic armor exited one of the side corridors and hurried past, chattering away in galactic standard.

His lips locked over hers and he thrust his tongue deep. Want and need slammed into her like a freight train careening out of control, while his hands slid down to mold the shape of her ass. She’d been anticipating a long night of passionate lovemaking before she’d realized her wish had gone so horribly wrong.

Heat coiled in the pit of her stomach and sent tendrils of erotic fire darting through every nerve. She suddenly didn’t care where he was taking her, so long as there was a sleeping platform there. Or a table. Or a floor. Or a kitchen counter. Right now, she’d be quite happy to fuck standing up right here in the corridor. Damn! She needed some action, and soon. He broke off the kiss as quickly as he’d started it, and Jenna shook her head in bewilderment. “What the hell?”

“I didn’t want that couple to be able to identify us later. Now all they are going to recall is two people making out in the corridor. They didn’t even get a good look at our faces.” He urged her further down the corridor. “My job is somewhat discreet, and I don’t want anyone connecting us with the big guy lying on the floor back there.”

He stopped in front of an access panel, and Jenna realized that they were in the outer rings where the passenger ships docked. Producing a plastic data card, Doug slipped it into the I.D. panel. The door cycled open with a quiet $swoosh, and he motioned her to precede him.

A short walk down the corridor led them to a ship’s entrance port. “Welcome to the $Gryphon.” He patted the ship affectionately before placing his hand on the security panel to allow it to identify him. “Best little spaceship in the galaxy.” The entry slid open smoothly.

“Nice.” Jenna couldn’t care less about a bucket of bolts. “Where’s your stateroom? You do have a stateroom, don’t you?” She ran a finger down the thin material of his shirt. “With a bed?”

Doug blinked, looking nonplussed for a second before a dark grin lit up his face. “Oh, yeah. I see you aren’t the shy and retiring type.”

“Nope.” Jenna shook her head and slipped aboard the ship. “I like my sex hot and hard, and I don’t care who knows it.”

“You’re not completely human, are you?” Doug flicked his palm across the control panel, and the entry port slid silently shut behind them.

“Not entirely.” Jenna wondered exactly how much he knew. Someone had obviously sent him to rescue her from her wish, but had they told him about her alien blood?

“Not that it matters, but your eyes have an exotic look to them that’s a real turn-on.” He lifted a hand to trace the line of her eyebrow. “And the color is the most amazing mix of blue and green… I’ve never seen anything quite like them.” He shook his head. “Sorry, sometimes I get carried away. Would you like a tour of the $Gryphon?”

“Just the stateroom.” She could feel darts of liquid heat roaring deep inside her; something about Doug had her libido racing into overdrive. She wasn’t sure how much longer she could resist the urge to rip his clothes off and have her way with him. “You did say there was a bed in there?”

“Right.” A sexy grin turned up the corner of his mouth. “Personal attention first. Tour of the $Gryphon later.”

Jenna leaned in to place a tantalizing kiss square on his lips. “Much later. Lead on.”

Doug dropped his arm around her shoulder, reaching down to brush his fingers over the outline of her breast. Jenna found herself glad that she’d worn a thin skin-suit to her disastrous meeting with the alien. She looked forward to removing even that small barrier to his hands.

“Bulkhead’s down here.” Doug wrapped both arms around her waist as they stepped into a void in the deck. Her breath caught in her throat as the floor fell away beneath her feet and they dropped for a fraction of a second until the levitation field kicked in to moderate their descent. She breathed a sigh of relief when she felt solid ground beneath her feet. Doug tugged her down the corridor and stopped in front of a doorway. Plucking his helmet off  with a gallant flourish, he gestured her to precede him. “Welcome to my lair.”

Blurb:

Sexy Druid meets sassy Selkie with a fear of commitment.

When Nikki’s sister sends a modern day Druid to warn her about impending danger, the attraction is instant and mutual, but the Selkie is having none of his silly talk about destined mates. Her animal form is a free-spirited otter, and she fears the call of the wild might be too strong to allow her to settle down and raise a family. Her greatest fear is that the call of the ocean will lure her away from her family, and her children will suffer as she did when her own mother deserted her.

But when the danger becomes all too real, Nikki’s link with the sexy Druid is her only comfort, and she realizes some risks just might be worth taking.

EXCERPT

Wolfe lounged against the split-rail fence, a slow sexy grin curving his lips. “You ask a lot of questions for a rescued damsel in distress. Aren’t you supposed to throw yourself at my feet in gratitude?”

Nikki bit back a curse. She was so not in the mood for this. “I don’t do damsel in distress, and I definitely don’t throw myself at men’s feet. I could have escaped just fine by myself.” Which was the truth. She felt just as comfortable in the forest as she did shopping on Robson Street in Vancouver.

Wolfe seemed to take the hint, holding up a hand in a conciliatory gesture. “Okay. Sorry, I didn’t introduce myself better back there, but I thought we needed to get moving. Those guys looked like they meant business, and I’d prefer not to find out just how proficient they are.” He paused as if deciding exactly how much to tell her.  “Yes, I really am a friend of Trina’s, actually more of a friend to her husband Jack than Trina. And yes, they really did send me to warn you. I just didn’t expect the danger to arrive before I did, hence the single horse. My original intention was to warn you of the danger so you could quietly slip away before the bad guys showed up. Luckily, Fred here is a gelding and quite gentle, which is a bonus because I’m afraid we’re going to have to ride double.”

“Is your name really Wolf?” Now, why did she ask that? His name was totally irrelevant.

He nodded. “Wolfe with an ‘e’. My mother was a bit of a flower child and I was born during one of her ‘let’s get in touch with nature’ phases.”

“Wow.” Nikki gave him a reluctantly sympathetic look. “A name like that must have gotten you some ragging as a kid.”

“Some,” he agreed. “It wasn’t all bad. I learned a lot growing up. Mostly I learned not to judge myself with other people’s yardsticks and that’s stood me in good stead over the years.”

That same crooked smile curved the corners of his mouth and Nikki felt her heart do a curious little flip. With that curly dark hair and those eyes, he must have been an adorable child.

“So you are friends with Jack?” That made a little more sense.

“Yes. We’re working on a research project together when I manage to drag him away from your sister. She doesn’t usually come with him so I admit I don’t know her all that well.” He stroked a hand absently down the gelding’s neck. “Last Tuesday, she and Jack showed up on my doorstep and she was really upset. She said she’d had a premonition her big sister was in trouble and she wanted me to warn you. Fast. She was adamant that the danger was imminent.  She said she’d tried calling you, but your cell phone wouldn’t connect, or you just weren’t answering. She didn’t settle down until I promised to come straight away.”

That certainly sounded like her little sister. “Trina knows I’m on holidays and I have a really bad habit of ignoring the phone. Plus, cell phone reception is sketchy in the mountains. A couple of years ago, she actually sent the Royal Canadian Mounted Police looking for me when I didn’t respond to her calls for a solid week.” She felt a wry grin curve the corner of her lip. “They weren’t impressed when they found me happily sunbathing by the lake.”

She gave him a reluctant smile. “I’m sorry for being so prickly. I haven’t even thanked you for coming to help me. I’ll feel better when I can talk to Trina and find out what she knows. I left my cell phone at the house when I decided to take a swim, so I guess I’ll have to wait until we get to town. Unless you have one I can borrow?”

Wolfe pulled a cell phone out of his pocket, holding it up so she could see the display. “And as usual on the lee side of the mountain, no signal. Town it is. We might as well get moving.” He tucked the phone back into his shirt pocket.

Straightening up, he checked the saddle girth before gesturing for her to mount. “I suppose I should have asked if you know how to ride?”

“Yes.” Nikki pushed a stray lock of hair behind her ear. “We always had horses when I was a kid.” Putting the toe of one foot in the stirrup, she swung herself onto the gelding in one graceful motion and held out her hand. “Need a hand up?”

“Nope. I can manage.” He ignored her proffered hand and sprang into the saddle behind her. Holding the reins in his right hand, he used his left arm to draw her back against him, molding his body against her. His warm breath teased her neck.

Pulling the gelding’s head around, Wolfe guided him down a well-worn path to the south. “So what is it that you do? Your sister said that you worked on contracts in various parts of the world, which is why I’ve never seen you at any of her performances.”

Nikki tried to shake off the unsettled feeling, not sure if it was caused by his proximity or fear of her unknown stalkers. “I’m a forensic accountant.”

Wolfe whistled softly. “Now that sounds like an interesting job. What does a forensic accountant do? I thought forensic implied something dead.”

Nikki shook her head, picturing an old-fashioned paper ledger gasping its last breath while she tried desperately to extract information from it. “I go into companies, usually ones that are experiencing trouble or are suspicious of their staff and go through the books with a fine-toothed comb. I look for anything out of the ordinary, anything that might imply something is wrong. I’m impartial so I don’t have the bias that an insider might have.”

“Sounds like fun.” Wolfe’s tone implied it would be anything but.

“It’s all about patterns.” Nikki screwed up her nose. “Accounting is a very simple form of mathematics. One plus one always equals two. When someone gets creative or makes an honest mistake, the pattern is off. I’m good at seeing patterns. So what do you do?”

“I’m a forestry consultant.” The gelding settled into a smooth rocking gait, and Wolfe gestured at the trees and bushes surrounding them. “This is my office.”

“Oh.” Nikki hesitated, but it was just too tempting. “How does the forest manage to pay you?”

“Nuts.” His serious tone belied the silliness of the banter. “Exchange rate’s down a bit due to the squirrel coup last year, but I do okay.

Nikki shook her head, feeling the knot in her gut relaxing just a tiny bit. You’re crazy.

She could hear the smile in his voice. “Yeah, but you started it.”
