ThrowBack Thursday – Accidental Pets (from 2009)

Sassi on the day she adopted me.

This is a little bit of a different Throwback Thursday. I was going through files on my hard drive and came across this one from 2009 called Accidental Pets. The little Jack Russel I wrote about passed away in 2018 at the age of 18. It hurt more than I can say to let her go, and despite my two new companions, I still miss her. She had an amazing personality and absolutely refused to believe there was anything she couldn’t conquer. Note the picture of her on the big bed while the great dane (Athena) is relegated to the small one.

What can I say? She was sure she was the biggest dog in the building!

Accidental pets…

My friend tells everyone that she has the perfect boyfriend. Tall, dark, handsome and he never ever disagrees with her. She’s  not lying.  His name is Berkley and he’s a black lab.

Can you see the little princess? Hint: Why would she sleep on the floor like a dog?

My best friend and constant companion is a female Jack Russell Terrier. She’s short, cute and very active. I like to refer to her as my little exercise plan. She can also be very pushy at times.  There’s a game we play, when she gets just a little too insistent on getting her own way. I call it – Who’s the Boss?  Occasionally, she lets me win that one.

She loved her tennis balls, and was happiest when playing fetch.

Sassi adopted  me at the local  shelter. I think the fates combined to throw us together. I picked out a nice quiet male spaniel  cross, but someone mixed up the paperwork. When I went to pick him up, the volunteer produced this under-nourished critter with the saddest brown eyes I’d ever seen. She wagged her tail and tried to bounce up high enough to lick my face. I was very doubtful, but the nice lady, after apologizing and explaining that the spaniel had gone elsewhere, told me that I could take her home and try her for a week. If it didn’t work out, I could take her back, no questions asked. Can you believe I fell for that?!

I really did try to tell her to stay off the desk. Obedience wasn’t her strong point.

Well, I took her home and she ran around in manic circles for several hours before throwing herself on my bed and going to sleep. The  shelter had named her Dash, but after watching her take over my house in less time than it takes me to  cook dinner, I dubbed her  Sassi. Since that day,  she’s become the office greeter, the kayak club mascot and my sounding board when I’m plotting a new story. . She makes me laugh, and adapts to just about anything I decide to do. She can swim, ride on the motorcycle, and walk for endless miles on those short leg. She knows how to be gentle with small children, and when the kids are old enough to play fetch she patiently teaches them what to do. My youngest grandson spent countless hours chasing her around the house to put the tennis ball back in her mouth after she’d dropped it at his feet.

As she got older, she mellowed and allowed visiting dogs to share their beds with her

Sometimes, when we’re sitting on the sofa sharing a snack in the evening,  I wonder if she snuck into the office at the shelter and switched that paperwork herself. I wouldn’t put it past her!

Happy Reading!

Werewolves, romance and adventure

Seducing Destiny: Jack, the alpha of the North Rockies pack, knows Destiny needs some time to come to grips with her werewolf heritage before he springs the whole mated for life thing on her, but when a band of rogue werewolves move into the area, Jack can’t afford to have his attention divided. It’s time to convince Destiny she belongs in his pack — and in his bed.

Dark Kisses: Kidnapped and dumped in unfamiliar territory, Katie has no idea where she is or why the geriatric old fool chose the Northern Rockies Pack territory to dump her, bound hand and foot. The fact that she’s just come into heat doesn’t help matters either. When Jeff finds her, his mere presence sends flames of liquid lust sizzling through her veins. Can she resist the dark wolf, or will she succumb to his wildly sexy dark kisses?

EXCERPT:

“Destiny stared in dismay at the box in the middle of her kitchen table. Her stomach lurched, a ball of anxiety settling in the very middle of it. Small by most standards, gold gilt covered the entire box, giving it an exotic look. An artfully tied crimson bow surrounded by curls of white lace sat cheerfully atop it, adding to the air of decadent luxury.

She knew who’d put it there, and she knew why. Jack. The Alpha of the Northern Rockies werewolf pack. The man who made her knees feel weak whenever she glimpsed him walking down the main street, or lounging at a local coffee shop. The man who’d make it plain that he intended to be her mate.

The absolute last man on the face of the planet that she intended to get serious about.

She had a boyfriend, one carefully picked with the future in mind. A trial attorney she’d met when she attended a convention in Calgary, Quentin Karnes had everything she wanted in a mate. On the fast track to a partnership in his prestigious law firm, he was cultured, rich, and moved in the highest social circles. Their children would grow up attending private schools, vacationing at the most prestigious resorts, dressing in the latest fashions. They’d want for nothing.

She’d worked hard to carve out a niche for herself in Riverton. Her accounting office catered to farmers and small businessmen, and she’d slowly managed to gain a reputation of being the person you wanted on your side when the government called to audit your tax returns.

She steeled herself and reached for the box. It wasn’t much bigger than a deck of cards, and she held it in her hand, somehow hoping that wishing would make it go away. When she’d moved here two years ago, she’d made it clear to Jack and every other member of the pack that she didn’t intend to join their little social group. She preferred to run alone. She hadn’t grown up in a pack, and if she could, she’d ignore her inner wolf entirely. So what if the sight of a full moon awakened an overpowering urge for a steak with the blood oozing out the sides? A girl needed to curb her baser instincts and make plans for the future.

No point in putting this off. Her sensitive nose could smell Jack all over the damn thing. She caught the trailing lace between a thumb and forefinger and gently undid the bow, dropping the cheerful piece of ribbon on the table. Taking a deep breath, she plucked the lid off.

Her breath caught in her throat. An exquisitely detailed chocolate wolf nestled in a cushion of crushed white velvet. Every detail from the tip of its muzzle to the dominant curve of its tail was perfect. Jack had reproduced himself exactly. She knew if she turned the little wolf over, she’d find a jagged scar running along its left flank.

“I suppose I could always bite your head off.” Destiny felt a wry smile tug the sides of her mouth. Although she didn’t like the idea, being the Alpha meant Jack had complete authority over all the werewolves in the Northern Rockies. Even those that didn’t want to accept him. The fact he’d chosen not to force her to take him for her mate didn’t mean he’d agreed to let her leave the pack. He’d said he’d give her some time to settle in. She’d hoped he’d forgotten about her and settled down with some other female. One who liked her inner beast.

She sighed and looked at the dark chocolate confection. The full moon was less than a week away. She’d been ignoring her darker side for a long time now, and she knew she wouldn’t be able to avoid going into heat this month. What were the chances Jack’s timing was coincidental?

She jumped, startled by the sound of a loud knock on her front door. Quentin must have gotten out of court early. She hadn’t expected him to show up for at least another four hours. She quickly put the lid back on the box. Sweeping the ribbon up off the table, she stuffed the box and ribbon into a drawer and slammed it shut.

“Come on in, the door’s open.” She hoped Quentin couldn’t hear the guilt in her voice. Not that she had anything to feel guilty about. Damn Jack and his fancy little chocolate creatures! She smoothed her hands down her skirt and tried to look calm.

“I know, I was just being polite.” Jack strode into the room, a crooked smile on his rugged face. “You’re not usually this happy to see me.”

Destiny’s heart did a little flip-flop. Taller than her five-foot eleven, Jack’s dark hair was tied at the nape of his neck with a strip of leather, and his sapphire blue eyes sparkled with mischief. Thickly roped muscles stretched the tight shirt and rippled with every step he took. He looked every bit as yummy as the chocolate creations he sold in his trendy boutique.

“I thought you were my boyfriend.” She looked pointedly behind him as if she expected Quentin to materialize any second. “I’m expecting him to drop in after court today.”

Jack ignored her reference to Quentin and gave her a toothy grin. “I intend to be a lot more than a friend, and it’s been a long time since anyone referred to me as a boy.” He advanced, his eyes sparkling. “Glad to hear you finally think of me that way, though, because unless my nose is deceiving me, you’re going to be begging for my attention shortly.”

Destiny felt a surge of color flood her cheeks and she turned away so he couldn’t see her face. It mortified her to know he could smell her eagerness. “You wish.” Now that was lame!

He took her by the shoulders and turned her around to face him, his touch surprisingly gentle for such a large man. “No, I know. The full moon is on Saturday. You haven’t slept with that wimpy boyfriend of yours, and you’re not going to if you want him to live to see Monday. A human male can’t begin to satisfy your needs. I wouldn’t have to lift a paw; you’d tear him apart yourself. Your frustration level is about to escalate to hellish proportions.” A devilishly wicked smile curved the corner of his mouth. “Fortunately, I can help you deal with that.”

….and I’m back!

Wow! I can’t believe it’s been almost 2 months since I posted anything on this blog! Actually I can, if only because it feels like forever. My mundane you-need-to-make-a-living-and-pay-the mortgage life took over entirely, and I have to tell you that is not the best part of my existence. After two months of no writing I think I’m going crazy. Really. Completely. So, here my promise to myself. I will write each and every day. It may only be ten or twenty minutes but I will do it. My sanity depends on it! Also, the dog is annoyed because he likes my writing space much better than my serious accountant space. The writing space has cushy furniture and a bigger window.

In case you need something to tide you over while waiting for my next new release, how about a collection of older stories from Changeling Press featuring on of my earler shifter stories? If you live anywhere near the flatlands, you know about prairie dogs. Cute, quick to jump down a hole in the ground, and very prolific. Very VERY prolific. They live in “towns”  populated by dozens and dozens of the little rascals in one location. Now what if that praire dog town was actually a town full of shifters?

They say a picture is worth a thousand words, and I just LOVE what this cover says!

Pre Release is September 21st, available everywhere September 28th.

Blurb:

Bikers don’t do forever, right? Her perfect match! So how did it all go so very wrong?

Fiona really wasn’t in the market for a lover or a partner or some guy to give her a sappy sweet happily ever after. Been there, done that, got the scars to prove it. She just wanted a nice one-night stand. She planned to be long gone come breakfast time.

When she saw that gorgeous cowboy ride up on his Harley, she figured it was her lucky day. Bikers don’t do forever, right? Her perfect match! They could tell each other a few lies, scratch each other’s itches and then go their separate ways. The last thing she needed was to hook up with some guy she’d smack headlong into at church the next day.

Simple, right? So how did it all go so very wrong?

What am I up to?

Well now isn’t that a good question! Sometimes I wonder that myself.

I am working on the fourth book in the Mercenaries Series. The title is Winter’s Quest and it is Trace and Winter’s story. If you don’t know who Trace and Winter are, then you need to go read books 1 through 3 that will soon be released as Second Editions from Changeling Press. Want a sneak peak at what what to expect from Winter’s Quest?  Here’s the working blurb. (Working means I might tweak it sometime between now and the actual release).

Mercenaries Four:  Winter’s Quest

Winter remembers all about the insanity of life as a lab rat, but she doesn’t know is how she got there. Given the mess she’d made out of her life up to this point, she needs to find the answers to her past before she can get on with her future.

Trace isn’t sure why Winter is so hung up on her past but if she plans on chasing all over the nine provinces looking for answers then it’s up to him to make sure she stays safe. And, while they’re spending all that quality time together, maybe he can convince her that he’s more than just a convenient sex partner.

I really need to get back to the writing cave so until next time…

Happy Reading!

BLURB:

Sarah wants a normal life, without all the fur, fangs and drama that comes with her werewolf heritage. She left her home pack and moved to a small town in the Northern Rockies hoping to leave the past behind.

The first time Drake crossed her scent, he knew he wanted Sarah for his mate. Now he just has to convince her that she wants that too. With a wicked sense of humor and a little bit of Christmas magic he hopes to bring her over to his side — permanently.

EXCERPT:

“If I didn’t know better, I’d think you were trying to avoid me.”

Sarah jumped as the werewolf disengaged himself from a particularly dark shadow. Crap! She’d forgotten how fast her kind could move when it felt motivated. Apparently this guy was extremely motivated.

Schooling her features into her best poker face, she took a deep breath and turned to face him. “If you didn’t know better? What makes you think you know anything about me?”

He laughed then. Actually laughed. The corners of his eyes crinkled and his mouth curved upward. So much for her chilling sarcasm.

“I know enough. Probably more than you want me to.” He pushed himself upright. It only took him one step with those long legs to put him so close that his scent tickled her nose.

A werewolf shouldn’t smell so good, shouldn’t make her belly clench in anticipation. The mere proximity of one certainly shouldn’t make her long to run free with all four paws on the ground. It hadn’t for months now, but she’d know the very minute she’d sensed this guy in the crowded bar that he was a threat to her new found equilibrium.

And that scared the hell out of her. She didn’t want anything to do with werewolves anymore. Their pack laws. Their aggression. Their bloodthirsty pack mentality and their total disregard for her feelings.

“Apparently you know where I work, and that would be more than I want you to know. Now run along and howl at something.” She turned on her heel and took one step toward the parking lot. She would not give in to her baser instincts. Nope. Not happening. Not even with the night of the full moon coming up fast.

She didn’t hear him come up behind her. He spun her around, his tongue halfway down her throat before she had time to react. His arms were every bit as strong as they looked, catching her when her knees buckled at the unexpected warmth blossoming in her belly.

What the hell? Her body had never reacted this way before, never betrayed her so blatantly. Want and need sent curls of heat racing through her veins. Damn. This couldn’t be good, no matter how good it felt. She relaxed into his embrace, letting him think she’d surrendered.

He hesitated for a moment, drawing his head back to stare at her with narrowed eyes. Distrust and something else lurked in their icy blue depths. He didn’t trust her sudden capitulation. Smart man.

$Wolf$. Smart wolf.

Apparently his lust overrode his caution and he pulled her up hard against him. She could feel the thick length of his cock pressing hard against her belly.

Lust seemed to be running rampant tonight. Moisture gathered at the apex of her thighs, as if her body expected her to give in and let this mutt have his way with her.

“I’ve never been referred to as a mutt before.” He mumbled the words against her lips, not bothering to lift his head. “I think I might be insulted.”

She jerked away from him. Not that she got far, his arms were like bands of friggin’ steel. His eyes were darker now, the color of the sky just before a storm rolled in. “I didn’t say that out loud.”

A wry smile quirked the corner of his mouth. “Then how did I manage to hear you?”

Good question. One that sent the lust packing faster than it had arrived. Vague whispered myths of bonded pairs being able to communicate telepathically teased the edge of her memory. Crap! This just got better and better!

A Learning Experience

As most of you probably know, I broke my leg a couple of weeks ago. Now things have improved since the dark ages of plaster casts and don’t have a shower for the next four to six weeks. (Shudder) I have a lovely contraption called an air cast on it. It looks as if I’m walking around with one downhill ski boot on. An interesting fashion statement, to say the least. It’s heavy, and annoying, and occasionally hard to get into the car or truck with, but still much better than plaster. So, overall, I should be grateful for our modern medical system and the ability to shower on a regular basis.

My mother used to have a phrase that she liked to throw at me a lot when I had to do something I didn’t want to do. “Think of it as a learning experience.” Well, this has certainly been a learning experience. My first broken bone. My first ride in an ambulance. My first experience with crutches. And the first time since I turned sixteen (don’t do the math, it’s scary!) that I have been physically unable to drive for a long period of time.

Do you have any idea how frustrating that is?! I need to ask someone to take me to the grocery store. I need to have a coworker pick me up for work each morning, and drop me off at night. I have to get someone to ferry me back and forth to church. I’ve missed the last three choir practices because I couldn’t find anyone to give me a ride. It’s maddening! If this is a leaning experience, then the thing I have learned the best is that I love my car, and driving is a fundamental part of my life.

So, what else have I learned from this? Don’t walk on ice, it’s slippery. Be nice to absolutely everyone – I never know when I will have to depend on them for rides. It’s a whole lot farther from the living room to the kitchen when I am hopping around on crutches. (Maybe I’ll lose some weight) Sometimes the stairs are easier to negotiate on my butt. And no matter how grumpy I get, the dog still loves me!

BLURB:

Kat hasn’t always been a stray — but times are tough, and when she lost her job, her no-good boyfriend dumped her. Now she lives in a deserted basement and scrounges for food behind the restaurants in the better section of town, while attending school during the day.

Jake feeds scraps of his dinner to the fluffy little con artist from time to time as he walks his beat, and he can’t get the sassy stray off his mind. He feels a strange affinity for the feisty little kitty so he decides to trap her and tame her. What he doesn’t realize is that she’s a shifter, and she’ll con his heart right out of his chest

EXCERPT:

Jake undid his shirt and plunked down in a chair at the table, putting his tightly muscled chest at eye level. Despite her annoyance, Kat felt a flicker of lust working its way down her belly to settle deep in her groin. Damn that looks tasty. I wonder… She managed to stop herself from imagining what the rest of him would look like nude. Enforcers were a tough breed, and he undoubtedly had the physique to go with the job.

“Not going to eat?  I’ll just leave it there for now. You might change your mind later, once you yet settle in a bit.” He stood to stretch, and the sight of those tight jeans wrapped around his muscular hips sent Kat’s hormones into overdrive.

She let out a frustrated yowl that should have warned him things weren’t quite what he thought, but the damn guy just cooed some banal goodnight and disappeared through the doorway, leaving her simmering with rage and unresolved lust.

Kat paced as best she could in the small cage while the sounds from the far room indicated that the Enforcer hadn’t retired for the night yet. Patience had never been one of her better qualities, and she barely managed to contain herself while she waited for him to settle down.

Probably in a bed. A nice soft bed. Naked. His kind, the tough Enforcer cop kind, always slept naked. She could almost picture him, his beautiful abs waiting to be caressed by her willing fingers while his big Enforcer sized cock laid stretched out across one thigh…

She shook her head, berating her overactive imagination.  Damn hormones, always putting her into places she didn’t want to be.  She tilted her head to one side. The apartment seemed quiet now, but she’d better give him a bit more time before she made good her escape. The way her luck had been running lately, the damned Enforcer would be sitting up in bed watching a chic-flick on the Holo-grid. A feline smile curved her lips at the thought of the big tough Jake watching something designed to con female humans into believing in true love. She snorted in disgust. Even she’d bought into the concept, until her last boyfriend has tossed her out without so much as a thank you.

So much for true love and happily ever after. She’d spent the last six months cursing her gullibility while she scrounged the garbage cans behind the high-class restaurants for dinner and squatted in a deserted basement. She’d enrolled in business classes during the day, determined to never again be dependant on a male for food or shelter.

She lifted her head, flaring her nostrils. The deliciously tempting smell of aroused male filled her nostrils and she felt the heat building inside her. Apparently, those weren’t chic-flicks he’d been watching. She needed to get out of here. Now. Before she did something she’d regret.

Slipping her front leg between the bars, she closed her eyes and concentrated on a partial shift. Most were-cats were unable to master the manoeuvre, but Kat had had lots of time in the last few months to practice. Not much else to do in the basement of a deserted tenement when sleep was slow to come.

She felt the fur receding, muscles and bone reforming. She held her breath, steeling herself to wait until she could feel her hand, could wriggle each finger individually. There!

Twisting her wrist, she reached for the lock of the cage. Snick. The simple catch fell open at her touch, the door swung wide.

So there, Enforcer. Not so easy to keep this little cat caged.

Kat pulled her hand back into the cage and scooted free, turning to glare at the offending pile of metal. Crouching in a corner of the room, she relaxed. After the partial change, a full shift was easy. She concentrated and let the change sweep over her.

Fully human now, she stood and stretched her arms above her head as she luxuriated in her human form. She’d spent way too much time lately trapped in her cat form, unable to risk being seen.

She looked around and located the doorway. Now all she had to do was get out of here without waking the Enforcer up.  That would be assuming he’d gone to sleep.

She stopped at the doorway, peering cautiously out into the hallway. She could see a large room at the end of the hallway. Probably the living room, where they’d entered the apartment. She tiptoed in that direction, being careful to set her feet down quietly. The last thing she needed was to have a creaking floorboard wake up the Enforcer.

She passed the first two doorways without incident; a bathroom and a very messy office. She glanced into the last doorway, and froze.

Sprawled across a king sized bed, the Enforcer was deliciously naked. His shock of flaming red hair lay mussed in disarray on the pillows, framing his angular face. Her gaze strayed lower, to the ropes of muscle criss-crossing his massive chest, and the temptingly flat belly. Lower still, his impressive cock lay across one stocky thigh just like she’d imagined it while his balls nestled into a curly nest of hair.

She sucked in a deep breath as heat flooded her body. In a different time and place, she wouldn’t hesitate to stop and dally with such a yummy male, but those days were long gone.  The world was a tough place for a kitty on her own. She couldn’t afford to be here when he woke up, and time was a wasting. Still…

She glided a few steps toward the bed. What if she turned the tables on him? She felt the corner of her mouth turn up in an evil gin. He was a cop; there must be handcuffs around here somewhere.
