Long ago, in a far off land, when I was a young child, I used to drive my parents crazy with one short word. Why. Why is the sky blue? Why can’t we have a cat? (My mother was highly allergic) Why do I have to be nice to my sister? Why does the water in the lake taste different from tap water. My questions were endless, and I have to admit sometimes I asked just because I felt like being annoying.
When writing a story, especially if it is fantasy or science fiction, everything has to have a reason. Sometimes, the whole plot is a matter of finding out who the characters are and WHY they do what they do.
Think of a planet far away. The atmosphere is red. Why? Are there minerals in the air that color it? Is it a reflection of the planet’s water source? The writer has to know why, or the planet won’t seem real to the reader. All of the differences from our normal view of life need to be explained. If the government is corrupt, how did it get that way. Why do people allow it to continue? Why are there sentient reptiles? Why did the dragons die off? Why do people wear tight-fitting uni-suits?
In the first installment of the Stargazers series – Wanton, the hero is a cyborg named Tarik. I needed to know why he was Cyborg. The answer to that led to an understanding of what drove him to form the rebellion and why he felt he needed to risk everything to rescue his little brother, even if he had to kidnap Krystal to do it.
Krystal is a Stargazer, but she is not employed by the Intergalactic Council, which is why Tarik chooses her to kidnap. The reader needs to know why the council doesn’t employ her. They need to know why she feels sympathetic towards her kidnapper. I needed to establish that sympathetic connection in order for her part in the rescue to be believable.
By the time I finished answering all of the Why’s, I had a plausible world and a believable plot, which I hope my readers enjoy.
So here I am decades later, and I’m still asking that one, annoying question. Why?
